Nathan Lyon Biography:
The great Shane Warne entertained us for nearly two decades. During his era, Stuart MacGill also spun the ball masterfully. But when these players left cricket, it seemed as if Australia had stopped producing spinners altogether. If anyone did emerge, they played a few matches, showed some promise, and then disappeared. Moreover, Australian pitches are not conducive to spinners, and in such conditions, a spinner entered the scene who was more of a one-trick pony.

Nathan Lyon Biography (Childhood) :
The story begins on November 20, 1987, in New South Wales, where Nathan Michael Lyon was born. The atmosphere in which he grew up was surrounded by cricket. In his childhood, Lyon moved to Canberra, where ample opportunities in cricket awaited him. There, he found a decent platform for cricket. He played for ACT (Australian Capital Territory) in under-sevens and under-tens cricket before representing ACT Comets. Mark Higgs, a former Australian spinner, served as his mentor. Higgs played a crucial role in Lyon’s development, providing guidance and turning his action into an effective yet straightforward one. Lyon continuously worked on improving his skills under Higgs’s guidance.
However, there came a time when Lyon’s career seemed to be stuck in limbo. He wasn’t progressing, and domestic-level cricket was his primary engagement, occasionally supplemented by club cricket matches. Given the fast-bowling prominence in Australia and constant worries about his future, Lyon decided to move to Adelaide. There, he took up the role of a groundsman at the cricket stadium, preparing the ground for other players to showcase their skills. Alongside his groundsman duties, Lyon continued to participate in matches and tournaments, keeping his cricketing dreams alive.

But then came the 2010-11 season when Nathan Lyon found great success in the Sheffield Shield, and that earned him a spot in the Australian team. On his debut, Lyon made a remarkable start with a sensational delivery that dismissed the seasoned Kumar Sangakkara, setting the tone for his career. What a match it was for him, taking wickets in his very first over. Lyon was only the third Australian spinner to take a wicket with his first delivery in Test cricket. He showcased such feats on his debut that hinted at his potential to become a great player.
In the same year, he achieved the best bowling figures by taking seven wickets in a match in Gabba. Although he had been performing well for quite some time, an odd and strange incident occurred during the 2013 Ashes series. Despite being the sole spinner in the squad, Nathan Lyon was surprisingly left out of the playing XI due to the uncapped Ashton Agar. In that match, Ashton Agar made headlines by scoring 98 runs, creating a world record. However, Lyon made a strong comeback in the third Test, reaching his milestone of 100 Test wickets.

Then came the nightmare of the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Lyon single-handedly led Australia to victory. In the first match, he took 12 wickets, dismantling our lineup. Consistent performances were being delivered one after the other, and it seemed like Lyon was performing on a different level compared to the pitches and conditions. However, his impact was not being reflected in the red-ball format. Lyon struggled to maintain his performance level in this format, where consistent success was hard to come by. Consequently, he was not included in the 2015 World Cup team. But in 2016, he made his T20I debut against India. The same year, he became the first Australian off-spinner to take 200 Test wickets.
In the 2017 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Bangalore, Lyon had no answers for him. Taking eight wickets one after another, he played a crucial role in securing a win for Australia. Lyon’s performance in the series set a record as he became the leading wicket-taker with 21 wickets, earning him a place in the World Cup team. However, he only managed to take three wickets in four matches in the World Cup.
Nathan Lyon Biography (G.O.A.T) :
Recently, he achieved the milestone of 500 Test wickets against Pakistan. After Shane Warne, Nathan Lyon became Australia’s biggest spinner. After reaching 500 Test wickets, he was bestowed with the nickname “G.O.A.T,” which stands for “Greatest of All Time.” Another interesting nickname he earned is “Garry,” inspired by Australian footballer Garry Lyon, popularized by Matthew Wade.
In the 2016 Pakistan Test, every time Lyon bowled, people started saying “Nice, Garry!” The phrase caught on, and even on Facebook, campaigns were run with Lyon being called “Nice, Garry!” on every delivery. Lyon, till now, has played a total of 123 Tests, 29 ODIs, and two T20 Internationals, with figures of 501, 29, and one wicket respectively.
